Ace, TrueValue and Do It Best hardware stores have teamed up with the state of Vermont to offer free fluorescent lamp recycling. (limit six per customer per visit). Vermont law prohibits disposal of mercury containing lamps in the trash.

Vermont Mercury Disposal Laws
ALL FLUORESCENT BULBS CONTAIN MERCURY!
4-foot fluorescent tube lights: .01 -.04 grams of mercury
Fever thermometers: .5 - .7 grams of mercury
Household manual thermostats: 3 grams of mercury
Blood pressure gauge: hundreds of grams of mercury
NEVER put mercury in the trash, or in a burn barrel!
NEVER allow mercury to go into the drain!

If you break a fluorescent light bulb
- USE GLOVES. Scoop up the glass and all other pieces of the broken bulb.
- Put all the pieces into a rigid container, such as a 5-gallon bucket or old paint can. Seal the container. Store the container in a shed or garage for your household hazardous waste day.
- Air out the affected room for 12 - 14 hours.
- Take the container to Household hazardous waste days.
